A simple plan for a two-hour study session
Two hours of studying can be productive or can turn into reading the same page repeatedly. A little structure makes the difference.
Before you start (5 minutes)
List exactly what you want to cover, for example "chapter 4 notes and ten practice questions". Gather your materials and put your phone away.
Block one: learn (50 minutes)
Work through new material in a single 50 minute session. Don't just highlight. Pause after each section and write a short summary from memory, then check it against the text.
Break (10 to 15 minutes)
Stand up, drink some water, and move around. Avoid anything that takes real mental effort, like social feeds or news.
Block two: practise (40 minutes)
Test yourself instead of rereading. Answer practice questions, use flashcards, or explain the topic aloud as if teaching someone. Retrieving information from memory is one of the most reliable ways to learn it.
Final stretch: review (10 minutes)
- Mark what you got wrong or couldn't recall.
- Write down three things to revisit next time.
- Note where you stopped so tomorrow's start is easy.
Spread it out
Reviewing a topic over several days beats cramming it in one night. If you can, come back to the same material a day later and again a week later, for shorter sessions each time.
